"Let the wife see that she respects her husband," says Ephesians 5:33. For the average man, no one's opinion of him matters as much as his wife's. Ladies, do you respect your husband?
This clip is a preview of the sermon "The Repsectful Wife," based of chapter 4 of Pastor Mark and Grace Driscoll's book, Real Marriage. In the chapter, written entirely by Grace, she writes about having a head of respect, a heart of respect, and hands of respect.
The sermon will be shown at all Mars Hill churches this Sunday, February 5, and posted online shortly thereafter.

It doesn't matter how much beer you can drink, how much meat you can eat, or how loud you can belch. That doesn't make you a man. Jesus Christ is the perfect man who defined masculinity in the gospel.

Covenant is about what's best for the other person; contract is about what's best for yourself. In a covenental marriage, a couple is in covenant with God through faith in Jesus, and then to be in covenant with one another, and the husband is to lovingly serve and lead the wife as Jesus lovingly serves and leads the church.

That's like two people saying they're vegans but like steak. No, it's sexual immorality and the Bible says it has no place in the church (1 Corinthians 5). If we ever put anyone above Jesus, we idolize that person.
This clip is excerpted from a Q&A Pastor Mark and Grace Driscoll did following the sermon "Men and Marriage," part 3 of Mars Hill Church's Real Marriage sermon series, based off the book of the same name by the couple. What does a wife do if she feels she's not easy to lead? Grace says that, for her, repentance was always the key first. A lot of times, too, there are underlying fears or lies that make trusting a husband hard, says Grace, and so it's important to ask God and your husband what those fears and lies are, literally write them down, and then combat them directly with truth.

Martin Luther had vowed to never take a wife. But Katharina von Bora boldly told him, since he was partially responsible for her unwed state, that he either needed to find her a husband, or he needed to marry her himself. And so he married her, "to spite the Devil," as he said. But what started out as a marriage of obligation turned out to be one of the most glorious marriages outside of the Bible in the history of the world.

People may fall out of repentance, but they don't fall out of love. God tells us we can love our enemies. How? Because love doesn't begin with or emanate from us—God is love. Even when we're not feeling particularly friendly toward our spouse, we can still love them with the love that God gives. Don't say you've fallen out of love. Don't say you're unwilling to work on your friendship with your spouse.

How's your friendship with your spouse? In preparing for their book, Real Marriage, Pastor Mark and Grace Driscoll read all or part of 187 books on marriage—and not one of them had a chapter on friendship. This Sunday's sermon, "Friend with Benefits," focuses on the importance of friendship in building a lasting, joyful, and God-glorifying marriage ... and laughter.
Come to any Mars Hill Church location this weekend to hear part 2 of the Real Marriage sermon series.

A few years ago, after 18 years together, Pastor Mark learned for the first time that Grace had been a victim of sexual assault in a previous relationship—although she had never identified herself as a victim and connected her story to the reality of what had happened to her. It was devastating to hear and at the same time explained the root cause of much of the barriers to friendship and intimacy they had in their marriage.

At Mars Hill Church, we are committed to not just believing things, but living in light of them. What the world doesn't need is another series of lectures on marriage, but practical training, teaching, and modeling on marriage. We want to encourage a culture of humble honesty, so Pastor Mark and Grace led by example, writing a book that openly and honestly examines their own sin and God's redemption in their own marriage.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, says Proverbs. Early on in the marriage, Grace shared a secret with Pastor Mark from her past. As he confesses, his response to her was not biblical, loving, or gracious, and his words often brought death and not life in the marriage. Subsequently, Pastor Mark's heart became bitter and in his preaching, he adopted a harsher, more chauvinistic tone, for which he repents and asks forgiveness.

We've all got someone or something that is the highest authority in our life, and sometimes that's the three-pound brain between our ears. At Mars Hill, our authority is the Bible, and we begin with the assumption that it is always truthful—not that that means it's a book that's always easy to understand.
This clip is of Pastor Mark preaching at Mars Hill Portland, and is excerpted from the sermon, "All Things to All People," a road trip led by Pastor Mark through a handful of Mars Hill churches as he preaches out of 1 Corinthians 9 on what it means to be churches devoted to God's mission to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations.

For more on the authority of the Bible, check out the sermons "Trial and Scripture" from Trail series preached out of 1 and 2 Peter, http://marshill.com/media/trial/trial-and-scripture or "Revelation: God Speaks" from the Doctrine series http://marshill.com/media/doctrine/revelation-god-speaks .
We believe that the Bible calls us to contend and contextualize the gospel of Jesus as missionaries in our communities. If people would get excited about Jesus, humility, repentance of sin, and loving their neighbor so that he would be their God and he would be their people—then the deepest desires of people's hearts would be fulfilled and ultimately satisfied because they would be meeting the God who made them an doing what he made them to do.

Pastor Tim Smith talks about the heart of the mission for Mars Hill Portland and what it was like to open a church in the face of a heap of cynical press. In the end, though, says Pastor Tim, God's used the negative attention to open up doors for relationships and bridge-building within the community—opportunities that might not have happened any other way. Pastor Tim then talks about what it means to be a missional church in Portland.

Mars Hill Kids is teaming up with The Rizers for a Scripture-packed, sing-a-long worship experience.
We know that the Word of God is sharper than a double-edged sword. We also know that singing Scripture is a fun way for kids to worship God while simultaneously learning about who He is. During worship at Mars Hill Kids, these two realities work together.
Starting this Sunday, your children will sing along with new animated videos from The Rizers featuring songs from both their albums. Each week, the Bible verse featured in the video will be paired with the big idea your kids learn about in their Doctrine for Kids lesson. Teaching and music will work together to point to Jesus and the truths He reveals in Scripture.
The songs featured in these ultra high-energy videos are available for purchase on The Rizers albums, so by pairing your family guide (free from your local MH Kids) and your Rizers album (available for purchase), you can continue to leverage these resources as you instruct and shepherd your kids throughout the week.
This Sunday, on the launch of Doctrine for Kids, kids will be learning about The Trinity and singing Psalm 136:4-2. Take a peek at the first video here.
